NFL officials are human and make mistakes like the rest of us. That said, the NFL admits they blew a call Sunday.
According to The New York Post, the NFL apologized to the New York Jets Wednesday for making a mistake in their game Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys.
Late in the first half, Jets defensive end John Franklin-Myers got flagged for roughing the passer on Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott. A replay showed Franklin-Myers appeared to be falling and/or was pushed when he hit Prescott below the knee, drawing the penalty.
Dallas ended up easily winning, 30-10, but that penalty might have changed the course of the game. The Cowboys led 10-7 and faced third-and-7 on the Jets 11-yard line on the play, in which Prescott threw an incompletion. They would have been forced to attempt a field goal. Instead, the penalty allowed them to keep possession, and they ended up scoring a touchdown and two-point conversion to go up 18-7.
Jets head coach Robert Saleh was not pleased with the penalty, telling reporters after the game, “There’s nothing I can coach to make that different. He got pulled down. His face hit the hip above the knee, which is still legal. Everything about it was legal.”
That’s essentially what the NFL told the Jets Wednesday.
