The NFL is always working to keep the game as culturally current as possible, and a large part of that entails making sure that the technology grows along with the league, which is why NFL coaches will have new headsets this season.

According to Pro Football Talk, Sony has designed new headsets for coaching staffs after consulting with the league, coaches, and football operations staff.

“The headsets have been tested in extreme temperatures and in the rain, and were tested using real crowd noises exceeding 100 decibels for ideal noise canceling in NFL stadiums. The headsets will have a custom-built microphone that isolates the coach’s voice and automatically mutes when lifted,” the outlet reported.

Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur was involved in the testing process and released a statement through Sony.

“As a head coach, communication to my staff and players is everything. Sony took the time to understand exactly what we need—from clarity in noisy environments, to comfort and reliability when the pressure is highest,” LaFleur said. “This headset took all factors of the game into consideration, and I am looking forward to being able to rely on them during the game throughout this season and beyond.”

Fans reacted to the news on social media.

“Can they be thrown to the ground at 105 mph?” one fan asked cheekily on Twitter.

“Great that NFL coaches will have better quality headsets this season, with background noise cancellation, better clarity & designed to function equally as well in all types of weather. But if these were designed ‘specifically for coaches’, who exactly were the previous ones designed for then?” someone else wrote.

It’ll be fun to watch as the league’s technology continues to grow with it.
