For quite a while, it looked like the New York Jets were the favorite to sign veteran free agent wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., but that ultimately didn’t happen as he signed with the Ravens instead. And one prominent NFL insider explains what went wrong.
According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, the New York Jets were never attempting to give Odell Beckham Jr. a competitive contract offer. They were simply hoping for what he describes as “a bargain-basement deal” for the former All-Pro wide receiver before the Ravens ruined their plans by giving Beckham a massive contract offer.
“Per a league source with knowledge of the situation, the Jets were contemplating a low base coupled with a high upside. They were basically hoping for a bargain-basement deal. The Ravens blocked that opportunity by blowing the market away with an offer far exceeding whatever the Jets or anyone else was willing to pay,” Florio wrote for Pro Football Talk this week.
Obviously, it didn’t exactly work out for the Jets, but they still have plenty of talent at wide receiver with star receiver Garrett Wilson heading into his second season with the team and newly-acquired veteran receiver Allen Lazard.
It’s safe to say Aaron Rodgers will still be happy with his weapons even if the Jets failed to get OBJ.
