When you claim you want to be the “Dirk Nowitzki of the NFL”, that’s quite a bit of a claim to make, especially for a late round wide receiver draft pick. But Moritz Böhringer, the Vikings draft pick, has a drive to succeed, and that drive has lead him to make some, shall we say, interesting decisions.
Böhringer is going to walk to practice every day and not buy a car. That might work if he was living in Berlin or Munich, but it’s a bit of a risk to do this in suburban Minneapolis. What’s his explanation for the decision?
“The main reason I walk everywhere is I don’t have a car because I wanted to save money,” he said. “Every morning I just walk to the facility and in the afternoon I walk back. My girlfriend thinks that’s pretty crazy because, like most Americans, she drives everywhere. In Germany it’s very different to the United States in many ways.”
Some NFL players are famously frugal, and there’s no reason for Böhringer not to be considering he’s moving to a new country and signed for the rookie minimum, but this might be pushing it. His American girlfriend is right to think he’s a bit nuts.
Böhringer reportedly lives three miles from the Vikings practice facility, which might be a comfortable walk each way in August and September, but we think he’ll be re-evaluating his choice come the harsh Minnesota winters if he indeed becomes the “Dirk Nowitzki of the NFL”.
