For the most part, the first quarter of Super Bowl LVI had been slow for the Cincinnati Bengals‘ offense. But with the first quarter coming to an end, Ja’Marr Chase gave his team a much-needed boost with a 46-yard reception.
Joe Burrow decided to challenge Los Angeles Rams star Jalen Ramsey with a deep ball to Chase. While Chase beat Ramsey on the play, Burrow’s throw appeared slightly long. Chase, though, made a tremendous one-handed catch while going to the ground.
If anyone was confused as to why Chase won the Offensive Rookie of the Year in the NFL, there should be no more mystery.
And as good as the catch from Chase was, Los Angeles safety Nick Scott must also be praised for making a heads-up play by tackling Chase. While Chase was contacted on his way to the ground, that all happened before he possessed the ball. Chase could have cruised into the end zone if Scott wasn’t alert.
Scott’s play was especially relevant as — while Chase’s reception set the Bengals up with a first-and-goal — Cincinnati didn’t score a touchdown. Burrow threw three incomplete passes and the Bengals settled for a 29-yard field goal from Evan McPherson to cut the deficit to 7-3.
