After blowing a 27-point lead in the Wild Card Round, the Los Angeles Chargers made some extensive changes to their offensive coaching staff.
Shortly after the loss in Jacksonville, the Chargers announced that they fired offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi, along with QB coach/passing game coordinator Shane Day, immediately starting the clock on finding the next coach to work with quarterback Justin Herbert.
Following his mutual departure from Dallas, the Chargers made quick work in hiring Kellen Moore to be their next offensive coordinator, according to NFL insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. Moore, who joined the Cowboys as QB coach in 2018, assumed the OC role a year later. The Cowboys opted to make a move at OC after another Divisional Round exit and Moore is now expected to go from working with Dak Prescott to Herbert.
After leaving Dallas, Moore was a hot prospect to become an offensive coordinator for another team around the league and the Chargers wasted no time in scooping up Moore, who had already interviewed for the Carolina Panthers head coaching vacancy before Frank Reich filled that role.
The NFL world had plenty to say about the Chargers opting to go with Moore as their next play-caller.
I don't know what to make of Kellen Moore's hiring for LA.
Being under McCarthy + Jerry Jones' watch might've limited his ability to do his job.
Also, Joe Lombardi might've protected Justin Herbert with his conservative offense. We'll learn a lot about Moore + Herbert in 2023.
