Even though the Lions recently spent a premium draft selection on a quarterback, Detroit appears to be ready to make a massive decision on the future of that position.
On Tuesday, Lions’ general manager Brad Holmes acknowledged that there has been dialogue between the team and Jared Goff’s representation regarding a potential contract extension. Holmes appeared on the Stoney & Jansen Show on 97.1 The Ticket and weighed in on a possible extension for the 28-year-old Goff, who has two years remaining on his current deal.
“We’ve had a dialogue there and we’ve had a dialogue with his agent,” Holmes said, via Pro Football Talk “We’re in a good place right now.”
Goff signed a four-year, $134 million extension when he was still a member of the Los Angeles Rams. While that’s a hefty number on the surface, Goff has little to no guaranteed money after the 2023 season. The Lions could reasonably move on from Goff and make Hendon Hooker their quarterback of the future. But, based on Holmes’ comments and the team’s actions, they don’t want their starting quarterback going anywhere after the season.
This past season, Goff completed 65.1 percent of his passes for 4,438 passing yards with 29 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He excelled under the tutelage of offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and led the Lions to a 9-8 record and on the cusp of a playoff berth.
The NFL world reacted to the huge news of a possible Goff extension on social media. The reactions were not exactly kind to the Lions.
Jared Goff was the highest-rated passer over the last 8 weeks of the season. They got a developmental roll of the dice with Hendon Hooker. Realistic chance of a home playoff game and seem to be building a team that can win on the road/outside in January.

when you have the opportunity to cap your successful rebuild by going all in on a quarterback who scored three points in a super bowl with a better coach and more talented offense you simply have to do it https://t.co/KWPWQvBvNl
