One of the best receivers in the NFL throughout his career, Calvin Johnson racked up countless yards and set a standard for new wideouts entering the league.
Knowing what it’s like to be a young rookie in Detroit, Johnson said he’s willing to mentor and offer some of his expertise to the Lions‘ newest receiver, Jameson Williams. Although Williams won’t be active at the start of training camp, Johnson said he’s willing to help him ease into life in the NFL.
“I don’t mind being that person to help guys alleviate that learning curve, especially with him being drafted highly,” Johnson said on Tuesday, per ESPN’s Eric Woodyard. “So, it’s a lot of high expectations on him. I know what comes with that.”
Although there was some tension between Johnson and the Lions over the repayment of a signing bonus when he retired, he seems to have no problem mentoring the next great potential wideout in Detroit.
Williams was one of the best receivers in college football last season. He had 79 receptions for over 1500 receiving yards and 19 touchdowns for the Alabama Crimson Tide. After tearing his ACL that he suffered during the national championship game earlier this year, the expectation remains that he will still suit up this season.
