Deion Sanders might’ve spoken too soon.
The Colorado Buffaloes head coach recently confirmed that Willie Taggart would be joining his staff in Boulder in a yet-to-be-determined role. Taggart, who has previous head coaching experience at FAU, Florida State, Oregon and Western Kentucky, has reportedly received a better offer.
According to NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero, Taggart is expected to become the Baltimore Ravens running backs coach. The Ravens and head coach John Harbaugh stay in the family, as Taggart coached under John’s younger brother, Jim, at Stanford. Taggart served as Stanford’s running backs coach from 2007-09, the last time he served as a position coach. Taggart also played under John’s father, Jack, at Western Kentucky, where he played quarterback for the Hilltoppers from 1994-98.
Taggart most recently served as the head coach of the FAU Owls and was fired after three seasons. It was the latest in a long line of head coaching roles that saw him move all over the country over the last decade. After rebuilding Western Kentucky — his alma mater — Taggart found success at South Florida. He was able to parlay that into a 7-5 season at Oregon, but jumped ship to Florida State after one season in Eugene. Taggart was fired toward the end of his second season in Tallahassee.
Taggart comes to the Ravens with no prior NFL experience and will work closely with offensive coordinator Todd Monken, who is coming from the college ranks himself. His relationship with the Harbaughs is yet again paying dividends.
