The New York Jets are putting their faith in Zach Wilson to be their starting quarterback following the season-ending injury to Aaron Rodgers.
However, they’re also making sure they have some options.
Tim Boyle was officially called up from the practice squad to the active roster on Saturday, making him the backup quarterback behind Zach Wilson on Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys.
If Wilson and Boyle were both unable to play for some reason, wide receiver Randall Cobb has been designated as the team’s emergency quarterback.
Boyle, who played college football at UConn and Western Kentucky, joined the Jets after four seasons playing for teams in the NFC North. He spent two seasons with the Green Bay Packers, one season with the Detroit Lions, and one season with the Chicago Bears. He’s appeared in 17 NFL games, starting three (0-3), and has garnered a 62.3 completion percentage, 574 passing yards, three touchdowns, and eight interceptions.
Boyle appeared in four games during the preseason this year, going 37-of-56 for 358 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions.
The Jets are hoping that Wilson, and Boyle if needed, are enough to get them into the playoffs. Once there, recent reports suggest that it’s entirely possible that Rodgers could return from his Achilles injury, though that’s a pretty big “possible.”
