Garrett Wilson’s frustrations with Zach Wilson continue to boil over. Wilson, New York’s go-to wide receiver, was able to win the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2022, despite a revolving door at quarterback. The addition of Aaron Rodgers had Wilson not only primed for a breakout season, but it gave him a real chance to actually receive some stability at the position.
At least so he thought.
Only four snaps into the season and Rodgers was done. And now Wilson has to find a way to make things work with Zach Wilson at quarterback. This is a receiver that had done so well with Joe Flacco and Mike White getting him the ball, but for whatever reason, the third-year quarterback out of BYU hasn’t had much success, if any.
Amidst the struggles at the quarterback position, the Jets have elected to sign veteran Trevor Siemain to their practice squad. Wilson, who has hauled in just 12 receptions (22 targets) for 165 yards and two touchdowns, reacted to the news of a new quarterback addition earlier this week.
“I didn’t know about it but we are excited to add anyone to the team and we trust what the people upstairs are doing,” Wilson said via USA Today, as he found out about New York’s latest addition.
Wilson has said all the right things, but it’s clear he’s getting frustrated. While he and Christian Gonzalez had a good battle going this past Sunday in the 15-10 loss to the Patriots, Wilson was open on several occasions and his quarterback was unable to get him the football. While Siemain is by no means a savior, he’s a veteran, who can keep defenses honest at the very least, and get the ball to New York’s top offensive player.
Whether it’s Wilson, Siemian or even Tim Boyle under center, Wilson made the message to the Jets’ quarterbacks room pretty clear.
“My job is to make their job as easy as possible,” Wilson said.
We’ll have to see how well he does at that in Week 4 against Kansas City, with the Jets in desperate need of showing any signs of life offensively.
