The New York Jets offensive line has already been hit with injuries in fall camp and now, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, they have signed veteran Duane Brown to a two-year deal to help fill in the gaps.
This signing came after the team lost Mekhi Becton to a knee injury that is expected to sideline the former first-round pick for the entire season. The Jets were already in contact with Brown before the injury, but now with Becton’s absence, it sped up the process.
Brown is a 5-time Pro-Bowler who spent last season with the Seattle Seahawks. Before that, he was with the Houston Texans for a decade. In his career, he has started 203 games.
The Jets are going to need someone to protect quarterback Zach Wilson’s left side, which is Brown’s position. The second-year QB had a hard rookie season, which might be made harder this coming season thanks to the offensive lineman woes.
Wilson struggled last year, throwing for just over 2,300 yards, 9 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. Defenses feasted off of him thanks in part to New York’s offensive line.
The Jets made a smart move by signing Brown to shore up that line. Hopefully, he’ll do a good job of protecting Wilson, which needs to happen if the Jets want a chance this season.
