With the NFL trade deadline of 4 p.m. ET on Oct. 31 fast approaching, there’s a lot of interest out there in what various teams might do. One drawing some attention is the Dallas Cowboys, sitting at 5-2 and second in the NFC East after a 43-20 win over the Los Angeles Rams Sunday. But team owner, president, and general manager Jerry Jones said Tuesday morning in his regular weekly radio appearance on 105.3 The Fan that he envisions them sticking with a “pat hand”:
That fits with comments Jones made to reporters last Thursday. There, he said “I don’t see anything heated up to a level that would cause something to happen. …If we don’t do anything at this trade deadline, we’ve got a team, in my mind, that can get us where we want to go.”
But there have been others wondering if Dallas should try to upgrade. In particular, Cowboys’ legendary receiver (and now weekly Undisputed panelist) Michael Irvin said last week that Dallas should be more aggressive to mimic their NFC East-leading rivals in Philadelphia. The Eagles are now 7-1, but they’ve still been eager to bring in players, trading for All-Pro defensive back Kevin Byard last Monday and signing Julio Jones earlier this month. And Irvin said on Undisputed that the Cowboys should take a similar approach:
“The issue is when you’re seeing Philadelphia hunt up every stone, turn over every rock trying to find players, bringing in Julio Jones on offense, going to get a safety from Tennessee (Kevin Byard) for your defense,” said the Cowboys legend Irvin. “You keep getting players because you’re saying, ‘We’re doing everything in the front office,’ and you send a message to the players, ‘You make sure you’re doing everything on the football field.’
…Irvin added, “Well, I wish Jerry would send that message, ‘We’re always looking.’”
We’ll see if the Cowboys do wind up holding this “pat hand” or not.
