During Sunday night’s NFC Championship loss to the San Francisco 49ers, Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell made some controversial decisions to go for it on fourth-and-goal twice instead of taking the short field goals. It ultimately was unsuccessful, as the Lions failed to convert in both situations, but quarterback Jared Goff still defended the decisions after the game
During his postgame press conference, Jared Goff was asked what he thought about the decisions from Dan Campbell to go for it on fourth down. Goff quickly said that he “loved them,” before defending his head coach.
“He believes in us,” Goff said according to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press. “I don’t know what the numbers are but we had a lot of big-time conversions this year that changed games and I don’t know what we were today. I know we had the two we didn’t convert. It can change a game if you convert them and we didn’t. And that’s part of the reason why we lost.”
The plays may not have worked the way the Lions would have liked, but it’s clear that the team was trying to be aggressive, which is the way that they have played all year.
