The Jacksonville Jaguars preseason camp has only been in session for a few days but the team is already making some changes. With Jags kickers Ryan Santoso and Andrew Mevis struggling right now, the team has signed journeyman Elliot Fry with the hope that he’ll win the job or spur competition.
Fry has been with eight NFL teams: the Chicago Bears, Baltimore Ravens, Carolina Panthers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Atlanta Falcons, Kansas City Chiefs, Green Bay Packers, and Cincinnati Bengals.
Despite being signed by all those teams, he only appeared in three games. But in those three games, he was fairly effective, going 5-of-6 on field goals and 5-of-7 extra points while sending 50 percent of his kickoffs for touchbacks.
The Jaguars seem to have bad luck with kickers. Former kicker Josh Lambo announced in May that he was suing the team because of the way he was treated by former head coach Urban Meyer whom he alleged cussed at him and kicked him.
The suit claims that Meyer “initiated a pattern of harassment, and created a hostile work environment.” The former coach threatened to cut Lambo, the suit says, and Meyer allegedly told Lambo, “if he ever objected to his behavior or challenged his authority again” he would cut him.
Lambo was cut by the team in October of 2021 after missing three field goals in the first three weeks of the season.
Since then the franchise has worked its way through a few kickers, which may explain why the team didn’t want to take any chances this time and signed Fry.
