The Indianapolis Colts made a number of big moves this offseason, trading Carson Wentz to the Washington Commanders followed by their trade with the Atlanta Falcons for veteran quarterback Matt Ryan.
The writing seemed to be on the wall this offseason for Wentz, with neither head coach Frank Reich nor general manager Chris Ballard willing to commit to the QB for the 2022 season. Now the Colts will seemingly put Ryan in the best opportunity to succeed since his Super Bowl appearance in 2016.
Ryan has not had a winning season since 2017, but Reich seems to believe that this season will be the perfect fit for both the quarterback and the Colts.
“I think everyone saw from the outside that this is a good fit,” Reich told NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero on Sunday. “People can universally agree you got a guy who’s still playing at a high level with a team and roster that is built to make some noise. We needed each other.”
The Colts had one of the most talented rosters in 2021, sending a league-high six players to the Pro-Bowl last season. However, the team had a complete meltdown in Week 18 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, missing out on a playoff appearance because of that loss.
While it is unclear whether or not Matt Ryan can play at the near-MVP level that he was once at, if he can provide the team with some steady quarterback play, the sky seems to be the limit for the Colts in 2022.
