The Indianapolis Colts suffered an epic collapse this weekend in a loss against the Jacksonville Jaguars in a win-and-in scenario on Week 18, leaving them outside of the playoffs for the 2021-22 NFL season.
Quarterback Carson Wentz had a very poor performance in the game, and now questions are being raised about Wentz’s future in Indianapolis.
Head coach Frank Reich was asked whether or not Wentz would be the Colts quarterback for next season, and Reich pretty much avoided the question.
“We loved the team we had this year, we knew everyone we brought in this year, we expected to play winning football,” Reich said, via Joel A. Erickson of the Indianapolis Star. “Next year’s roster will be next year’s roster. I don’t want to open it up about one player and then start talking about all of them.”
While it is fairly common for an NFL head coach to not want to commit to a player for sure ahead of next season, it is worth noting that Reich has committed to previous quarterbacks before at the end of the season.
Last year, Reich said that he wanted Philip Rivers back to be the quarterback of the Colts. Rivers took the Colts to the playoffs, which Wentz failed to do. Rivers retired, so they went in a different direction, but, interestingly, the same vote of confidence was not put into Wentz by Reich.
The Colts went from legit playoff contenders to out of the playoffs after losses to the Raiders and Jaguars in back-to-back weeks, and now there are questions for the future in Indianapolis going forward.
