Former San Francisco 49ers tight end Dwight Clark was not only a multi-time Super Bowl champion but he was part of one of the most iconic plays in NFL history. After a courageous battle with ALS, Clark’s final resting place will have a symbolic connection to that play from 1982.
Clark is buried next to the goal post that was in the end zone for “The Catch.” Obviously, Candlestick Park has been demolished but former owner Eddie DeBartolo created a spot on his ranch in Montana that has the goal post erected and a spot for Clark on what would be to the left of the goal post, where he made the catch that got the 49ers to their first Super Bowl.
Former coach Steve Mariucci tweeted a video of Clark’s resting place. Included is a headstone that reads “The Catch” and “The dynasty began with you!”
This is a pretty nice tribute and gesture from DeBartolo toward a player and obviously a dear friend. And I imagine Clark’s family was okay with this as well so it’s certainly a cool way to honor one of the greats.
