Things didn’t work out for running back Trey Sermon for the San Francisco 49ers. He was taken in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft but saw limited action and was waived after only one year. Now, one day after being waived by the 49ers, he’s going to a new team with a lot of familiar faces — the Philadelphia Eagles.
The Eagles announced on Thursday that they had claimed Sermon.
And if it wasn’t obvious before, it’s clear now that the Eagles are putting as many familiar faces around quarterback Jalen Hurts as they possibly can. Sermon, who played at Oklahoma before transferring to Ohio State for the 2020 season, is now Hurts’ third teammate from the 2019 Sooners on the Eagles.
The obvious connection was noted by several people in the NFL world.
#Eagles have signed former #49ers RB Trey Sermon to their active roster. Probably a better scheme fit with Philly than San Francisco

If you’re looking to replicate a college offense, Oklahoma’s 2019 team is not a bad way to go. The Sooners went 12-2 that season, averaging better than 42 points a game. And while they were routed in the College Football semifinal against LSU, the Sooners did manage to put up 28 points on the eventual national champions.
Sermon was an odd-man out with the 49ers as a rookie in 2021. San Francisco’s rushing attack generally centered around fellow rookie Elijah Mitchell and receiver Deebo Samuel. Mitchell carried the ball only 41 times for the 49ers in his rookie season. He rushed for 167 yards with one touchdown. But Sermon is only 23. So, he still has plenty of time to get his NFL career going in the right direction.
