Many football players reacted strongly to the news Chip Kelly was fired by the Philadelphia Eagles yesterday, but one current Eagle is taking back what he said. When pressed with the news, Marcus Smith, a first-round pick by Kelly in 2014, told NJ.com he was ecstatic with the news.
“I was ecstatic,” Smith said following Wednesday’s practice when asked what his initial reaction was to the news of Kelly’s release. “I didn’t expect it to happen right when it did. I didn’t think it was going to happen. I know speculation, that everybody was was talking about it on ESPN. I was actually getting a massage when it happened. I really can’t tell you how it happened. It just did.”
If Smith’s statement sounds a bit off, it’s because he had a mix up of words. Smith meant to say surprised instead of “ecstatic” which makes sense in the context of his words.
Perhaps this was a Freudian slip on Smith’s part, but Eagles fans are relentlessly mocking him for the mix-up.

It’s not a fun time to be Marcus Smith.
