The Washington Football Team is set to announce their new team name on February 2. The only clues we had from the team was that co-owner Tanya Snyder narrowed it down to eight possibilities between the Armada, Brigade, Commanders, Defenders, Presidents, Red Hogs, Red Wolves, and Washington Football Team. And team president Jason Wright elaborated further by eliminating Red Wolves.
Considering the team wouldn’t turn down a possibility of selling more team merchandise, they probably weren’t keeping Washington Football Team so that narrowed it down to six. Now, publicly available domain information may have revealed that the team will be calling themselves the “Commanders” next Wednesday.
Sure enough, look up the “commanders.com” domain and it’s registered under MarkMonitor Inc., which is the company that registers the domain names of the majority of the other NFL team sites. Nothing is for sure until it’s official but this is the best evidence we have had so far.
This comes off the heels after previous speculation indicated that it could be the Admirals because “washingtonadmirals.com” redirected to Washington’s site. It wasn’t one of the finalists and now redirects to the NFL’s Crucial Catch page.
While the Admirals thing was likely to be a coincidental misdirection, trying to misdirect people on the Commanders name is a lot less plausible. With none of the other domains registered under MarkMonitor and we’re coming up on less than a week for the reveal, unless anyone within the team actually denies the name, it’s likely going to be the Commanders.
