Former Ohio State football star J.T. Barrett had a ton of success over the course of his collegiate career against the Michigan Wolverines, going undefeated against the Big Ten rival. He’s now helping a team in the state of Michigan after being given a job by the Detroit Lions this past offseason as an offensive assistant, and he’s now been given a huge promotion.
The Lions revealed on social media that Barrett will now serve as the team’s assistant quarterbacks coach for the upcoming 2023 NFL season.
Barrett will help a Lions offense that was extremely impressive this past season. Detroit finished the regular season in the top-five in total yards per game, and top-ten in total passing yards per game.
The former Ohio State standout played for the storied program from 2014-2017, where he helped to program to a 44-6 record over his career. His NFL career as a player was not nearly as successful, but he may quickly become a prominent coaching name at the NFL level in the future.
This promotion seems to be something that Lions fans mostly are in favor of due to his vast experience at the quarterback position over his collegiate and NFL career.
The Lions organization has a very intriguing decision upcoming this offseason when it comes to who Barrett will be working with as the team’s starting quarterback.
Detroit’s 2022 starter, Jared Goff, is under contract through 2024, but the team has a potential out of his contract this offseason. If they decide to pick up his contract, he will be owed $20.9 million for the upcoming season.
