For 20 years, Darrell Green was a stalwart of the Washington Commanders, spending his entire career with the team and becoming one of the NFL’s most prolific cornerbacks.
Green, who was informed during Friday’s NFL Draft that Washington would be retiring his jersey this season, announced the team’s second-round pick.
He announced the pick without issue, which was Illinois Fighting Illini defensive tackle Jer’Zhan Newton, but not before first spending nearly three minutes on the stage with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell
Green was clearly having a blast out there, which is nice to see. Originally drafted by Washington in the first round of the famed 1983 NFL Draft out of Texas A&M-Kingsville, he went on to win a pair of Super Bowls with the team and was named to seven Pro Bowls. Green also appeared on the NFL 1990s All-Decade team and was named to the NFL’s 100th Anniversary team.
He also holds the NFL record for most consecutive seasons with at least one interception (19) and played more games than any defensive player in league history (295), along with a litany of Commanders franchise records.
After his retirement in 2003, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2008, his first year on the ballot.
