Things have objectively gone from bad to worse for the New York Giants.
The G-Men (2-5) have had to turn to backup Tyrod Taylor in the wake of Daniel Jones’ neck injury. Taylor has played largely fine, leading New York to a 1-1 record in relief of Jones, who has just been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Jets. So, Taylor will be making his third consecutive start come Sunday.
The question that was raised on Friday by reporters is Jones’ status for the remainder of the season.
In three games (two starts), Taylor has completed 53-of-80 pass attempts (66.3 percent) for 571 yards with two passing touchdowns. As for Jones, who coach Brian Daboll established was the team’s starter when healthy earlier this week, he’s completed 104-of-151 attempts (68.9 percent) for two touchdowns against six interceptions.
After Daboll told reporters that Jones was OUT for Sunday’s game, he was non-committal on the 26-year-old’s status. When asked if Jones will play again this season, Daboll reportedly told reporters that he doesn’t have a crystal ball and they’ll see where Jones is next week. This comes after Jones was listed as “questionable” for last week’s game against the Washington Commanders.
This is certainly a change in tune on Daboll’s part and the NFL world was quick to react to the brutal update on his status.
According to The Athletic’s Dan Duggan, Daboll did say Jones has been taking scout-teams reps since last week. Though, right now, the issue is him being cleared for contact. And based on Daboll’s comments Friday, that doesn’t appear to be something that will happen in the near future.
