Larry Allen, a Hall of Fame offensive lineman and a key member of the Dallas Cowboys dynasty of the 1990s, died unexpectedly Sunday. He was 52.
ESPN reported Allen died while vacationing in Mexico with his family, but did not report a cause of death.
Former Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman shared news of Allen’s passing Monday.
“Just received the heartbreaking news of the passing of our beloved teammate Larry Allen. He was a HOF offensive lineman that dominated opponents regardless of the position played. Off the field, he was a gentle giant that loved his family. Rest in Peace LA.”
The Cowboys shared a statement calling Allen “one of the most respected, accomplished offensive linemen to ever play in the NFL” whose “versatility and dependability were also signature parts of his career.”
A second-round pick by the Cowboys out of Sonoma State in 1994, the powerful Allen helped protect Aikman and opened holes for running back Emmitt Smith on those successful 1990s Dallas teams. He played in 11 Pro Bowls and earned first-team All-Pro honors six times.
After playing 12 seasons and winning a Super Bowl championship with the Cowboys, Allen finished his career with two seasons in San Francisco.
News of Allen’s death stunned the NFL world, but many paid tribute by posting videos that showed him doing almost surreal things.
