Last year, former Georgia Bulldogs and NFL star running back Herschel Walker attempted to run for Senate, taking on incumbent Raphael Warnock in Georgia. This year, another former football star is attempting a similar feat as former Tennessee Titans linebacker Colin Allred is running for Senate in 2024.
Colin Allred will be challenging incumbent Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) for the U.S. Senate seat in 2024, he announced on Wednesday morning. And it sounds like he’s taking aim at Ted Cruz.
“When I left the NFL, I thought my days of putting people on the ground were over. Then, January 6th happened,” Allred said in a video, revealing that the Jan. 6 events inspired him to run against Ted Cruz.
“We don’t have to be embarrassed by our Senator. We can get a new one,” Allred said. “I’ve taken down a lot tougher guys than Ted Cruz. So let’s get on the field and find out.”
It’s a pretty massive announcement and it led to quite a reaction on social media.

I am so incredibly proud to be part of #TeamAllred@ColinAllredTX was born and raised in Dallas, and works tirelessly across the aisle to reflect the values and big hearted generosity of all Texans. It's past time Texas had the Senate representation it deserves. Join the team! https://t.co/3oVGg2ZPk3

The next several months will certainly be interesting as Allred ramps up his campaign. We’ll have to see how he fares in the 2024 election when it’s finally time to cast the ballots.
