Former Auburn quarterback and NFL MVP Cam Newton runs a drill during Auburn Tigers Pro Day at Woltosz Football Performance Center in Auburn, Ala., on Tuesday, March 21, 2023.

Free agent quarterback Cam Newton to the Cleveland Browns?

The former MVP said he’s open to the idea in a recent podcast appearance in which he listed all the current NFL starting quarterbacks that he would willingly back up this season. The list included greats like Aaron Rodgers and Lamar Jackson.

It also included controversial Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson.

Watson missed 12 games last season after the NFL suspended him for gross sexual misconduct alleged by over 20 women relating to message services he received.

That doesn’t apparently matter to Newton, who said that he had “grown to admire the person, the athlete that [Watson] is.”

Newton said he saw it as an opportunity to mentor the younger quarterback.

“I know I could provide services for him on the field as well as off the field,” he said.

The former No. 1 overall pick hasn’t appeared in the NFL since 2021. He last played for the Carolina Panthers, the franchise he led to Super Bowl 50 in 2016. He last played a full season with the New England Patriots in 2020. The Patriots finished that season 7-8.

The Browns finished 7-9 last season, good for last place in the AFC North. Watson finished with a Quarterback Rating of 79.1, the lowest of his career.
