The Los Angeles Rams and the San Francisco 49ers were the last two teams in the sweepstakes for then-Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey. We know the 49ers won that derby, but now we know how close the Rams were to acquiring McCaffrey’s services.

The 49ers won the trade with a second- and third-round pick in the 2034 NFL Draft plus a fourth- and fifth-rounder in 2024.

The difference was that fourth-round pick in the 2024 draft.

“FOX: The #Rams offered the #Panthers a 2nd, 3rd and 5th round picks for RB Christian McCaffrey, according to @PSchrags. The #49ers added the 4th round pick that the Rams couldn’t to seal the deal,” Dov Kleiman wrote.

McCaffrey made his debut for the 49ers on Saturday in a 44-23 loss to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. McCaffrey finished the game with eight rushes for 38 yards and two receptions for 24 yards.

On the season, the running back has compiled 93 rushes for 431 yards and two touchdowns. He has added 35 receptions for 301 yards and a touchdown through the air.

Coincidentally, McCaffrey and the 49ers are next in action on Sunday when they head south to face the Rams in a pivotal NFC West matchup. The 49ers opened as two-point favorites entering the contest.
