The Kansas City Chiefs beat the Houston Texans 34-20 in Thursday night’s NFL season opener, and the score doesn’t accurately show how lopsided the game was. This was a beatdown, with Kansas City leading 31-7 with under eight minutes remaining.
And, in what is a scary thought for the rest of the NFL, the Chiefs’ offense may be even better than the one that won a Super Bowl last season. That’s because of the addition of running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire, who the Chiefs selected with the last pick of the first round in 2020 NFL Draft.
Edwards-Helaire had 25 carries for 138 yards and a touchdown, with the score coming on this nifty 27-yard run:
Having a stud running back, to go with the absurd passing game led by Patrick Mahomes, Tyreek Hill, and Travis Kelce, could take this offense to another level.
As for that passing game, Mahomes only threw for 211 yards, but efficiently- 24-of-32, three touchdowns, zero interceptions, good for a 123.3 passer rating.
The Chiefs play the Chargers in Los Angeles in Week 2, before a Week 3 showdown against the Baltimore Ravens — a potential AFC Championship Game preview — on Monday Night Football.
The Texans, meanwhile, have a brutal stretch to the season. Starting the year at Kansas City was rough enough, but it’s followed by facing the Baltimore Ravens, Pittsburgh Steelers (in Pittsburgh), and Minnesota Vikings.
