NFL records are nothing new for Patrick Mahomes.
The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback already holds almost a dozen NFL marks, and each game seems to find statisticians recording another Mahomes milestone, and he was at it again Sunday. Mahomes threw for 328 yards and a touchdown in a 27-24 victory against the Denver Broncos.
That gives Mahomes 5,408 yards for the season, the second time he’s eclipsed 5,000 in his career. He joins Drew Brees and Tom Brady as only the third QB to have multiple 5,000-yard seasons. (Brees performed the feat five times, Brady twice.)
That’s a legitimate stat. But as we mentioned, each game seems to bring Mahomes another sort of NFL record or statistical feat. With two scoring passes to running back Jerick McKinnon Sunday, and another to tight end Blake Bell, Mahomes drew within reach of an extremely obscure NFL record.
We didn’t even realize someone tracked this sort of thing. However, according to NFL Research, Mahomes now has 27 TD passes this year to running backs and tight ends. Only Hall of Fame quarterback Y.A. Tittle has more, with 28 in 1963.
Tittle had a couple of Hall of Fame running backs in Frank Gifford and Hugh McElhenny to throw to that year for the New York Giants. Mahomes has a likely future Hall of Fame tight end in Travis Kelce, who has 12 TDs this season. Hey, a good quarterback uses all his weapons. We doubt they’ll stop the Chiefs game next week to give Mahomes the ball if he breaks this obscure record, however.
