The Kansas City Chiefs made it official on Friday. The Chiefs promoted offensive assistant Matt Nagy up to offensive coordinator.
Nagy, who flamed out as head coach with the Chicago Bears not too long ago, gets another crack at the job he held prior to that hire. Nagy worked under head coach Andy Reid dating back to his days with the Eagles, but most notably held the offensive coordinator position from 2015-2017.
Kansas City announced the promotion for Nagy on their Twitter account.
“We have promoted Matt Nagy to Offensive Coordinator,” the Chiefs revealed.
Nagy’s return also comes with an interesting subtext. Speculation is that he could be the top candidate to be the heir apparent to Reid when he retires. A recent report from Aaron Wilson suggested that Nagy is the top choice to succeed Reid, and the plan could come within three years.
In Chicago, Nagy struggled coaching offense with Mitchell Trubisky and then later Justin Fields. He received heavy criticism from Bears fans, and ultimately the team canned him after the 2021 season. Nagy quickly returned to Kansas City and worked on staff this season. The Chiefs, of course, won the Super Bowl against the Philadelphia Eagles. So since Nagy was around, once again, he likely built up a rapport with the team to make this an easy choice.
The NFL world is buzzing over this news.
And will no doubt get another HC job next off-season. Despite (waves hand in the air) https://t.co/XHDCdNzEn3
