The Chicago Bears brought in former Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson in the hopes that Johnson would have the same effect on young quarterback Caleb Williams that he did with Jared Goff in Detroit, who many fans and pundits had written off as a bottom-tier starter before he arrived in Detroit.
It would appear that Johnson has already imbued some confidence in his new quarterback, who shared some lofty goals he set for himself earlier this offseason.
“Obviously, I have self-goals, and that’s being the first 4,000-yard passer in Bears history,” Williams said. “That’s a goal of mine. Seventy percent completion helps the team, keeps us on the field, puts us in better positions, and then other than that just trying to go down and score the most points that we can with each drive that we have.
“That’s kinda my self-goal, and obviously, other than that, you gotta go win. That’s success for me, that’s success for the team, and that’s all we wish for and all I wish for.”
Williams also shared that he is ready to move on from his struggles last season, which he is viewing as a part of the learning process of a young quarterback in the NFL.
“Last year was more of a learn how everything goes, learn how the NFL is…And this year for me, it was trying to take a step up in my leadership role and pushing the guys. And part of it is going out there and being right and doing everything,” he said, via ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.
Johnson is sharing what he’s seen from Williams so far, and it’s safe to say he feels the young gunslinger is taking the neccesary stesps.
“We’re always judging & critiquing the presnap process, the footwork, the decisions, the accuracy, all those things. Slowly but surely you see improvement in each one of those categories,” Johnson said, via FOX 32 Chicago.
It’ll be interesting to see how things come together for Williams on the field this season.
