The Los Angeles Chargers added former Pittsburgh Steelers running back Najee Harris in free agency this offseason. The franchise figures that Harris will be a key piece to surround star quarterback Justin Herbert with to make sure that the quarterback has sufficient help around him to finally defeat his playoff demons.
Unfortunately, Harris suffered a fireworks-related eye injury during the Fourth of July weekend. Now, the first major consequences of the injury are being confirmed, as it appears Harris won’t be available for the beginning of training camp.
“Chargers GM Joe Hortiz said Najee Harris (eye) will likely begin training camp on NFI. Harris is expected to report to The Bolt later today, per Hortiz. Harris has been receiving treatment from doctors at Stanford,” reported The Athletic’s Daniel Popper.
Fans reacted to the news on social media.
“Najee just lost his job. Hampton is gonna take over now that he’s given the chance to start and Harris will be left behind,” one person wrote on Twitter.
“Prolly just ruined his career to shoot off fireworks. Real smart,” someone else wrote.
“I just don’t see a world where Omarion Hampton isn’t getting 20+ touches per game by week 4,” one fan added.
It’ll be interesting to see if Najee returns to a starting job in Los Angeles.
