It’s been a rough couple of years for Carson Wentz.
Once hailed as a savior with the Philadelphia Eagles, he was eventually run out of town and traded to the Indianapolis Colts two seasons ago. Unfortunately, that season ended in disappointment, much of which was heaped on Wentz’s shoulders.
He was then traded to the Washington Commanders where he suffered through some injuries but still wasn’t able to secure his staying job by the end of the season. He was cut last week and now appears ready to enter the veteran backup portion of his NFL career.
Over the years, Wentz has signed some big contracts, including a four-year, $128 million extension in 2019, but the results just haven’t been there to make them count. And NFL insider Peter King laid that out in crushing fashion in his Football Morning in America column on Monday.
“Even though Wentz was on his way to a great season before injuring his knee in 2017, he could never repeat it and in fact regressed,” wrote King. “I’d argue that no player in NFL history has cost so much and delivered so little.”
Ouch.
Kingi s right that Wentz looked like a star in 2017 before his injury. However, since then, he’s been unable to recapture that magic, or any magic, and prove why he would still be worth considering as a starting quarterback in the NFL.
