When a team selects a quarterback with the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft, it’s usually safe to expect that quarterback to be in the starting lineup almost immediately. But it sounds like that might not be the case for Bryce Young with the Carolina Panthers.
This week, Panthers head coach Frank Reich revealed that veteran quarterback Andy Reich will remain the team’s starting quarterback and take the first-team reps during practice until the team deems that Young “ready” to take over as the starting quarterback.
“When he’s ready, when it’s best for the team, that’s when we’ll look to make the transition,” Reich said according to Joseph Person of TheAthletic.com. “But when we come back out Monday, Andy will be taking reps with the ones. Bryce will be with the twos. But Bryce is gonna get a lot of reps. He’ll likely even get a few more than Andy just as the new guy.”
It’s pretty surprising news, and the NFL world had plenty to say about it.
I wouldn't overreact to this too much. We already know what Dalton is. I'm all for giving Bryce Young time to get up to speed at the NFL level instead of feeding him to the wolves.
Not every rookie QB can do it but some situations can allow for it. https://t.co/6zCcQGqUYO

We all know that at some point, the #Panthers will be forced to start Bryce Young. Also, nobody should be surprised that Frank Reich is rolling with Andy Dalton first. https://t.co/RTDQVvRjTk

I guess it ain't that bad but Carolina is one of the better spots for a Rookie QB to start Day 1 https://t.co/glGNPlLOGZ

Reich did indicate that Young has been impressive during rookie minicamp suggesting that it won’t be long until he does find himself at the top of the depth chart. But until then, it sounds like Dalton will be the team’s first-team quarterback.
