Many saw the Arizona Cardinals’ recent release of veteran wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins as an indication that they could be in for a rough year this upcoming season. However, star running back James Conner has different plans.
The release of Hopkins is far from the only issue that plagues this team. There are still questions about exactly when star quarterback Kyler Murray will return this upcoming season after his torn ACL at the end of last season.
Despite this, Conner seems to be pretty confident that the Cardinals are going to be just fine. He spoke about the upcoming season, where he said that he is excited to “prove people wrong”.
“Nobody believes in us, but that’s OK,” Conner told Doug Haller of TheAthletic.com. “That’s the exciting part. To prove people wrong.”
The Cardinals are also heading into the upcoming season with a first-year head coach in Jonathan Gannon. All of these factors certainly don’t bode well for the organization as they look to return to the postseason.
Gannon doesn’t seem to be worried about the departure of Hopkins however. He said on Friday that releasing him was “the best thing for the team”.
“Yeah, just all the factors that were in play, we just felt that it was the best thing for the team to play with who we have,” said Gannon.
It may be an uphill battle for the Cardinals to defy the low expectations set for them by most. But at least Conner is confident that they are capable of doing so.
