The Tampa Bay Buccaneers opened training camp looking to get their roster ready to make a deep playoff run behind the arm of veteran quarterback Baker Mayfield, who has found the perfect culture fit for him in Tampa.
When the Bucs are fully healthy, they boast one of the most lethal offenses in the league, and they seem to have gotten a major boost with the emergence of rookie wide receiver Emeka Egbuka in his first NFL training camp.
However, the Bucs offense is undergoing a major shakeup at the quarterback position, according to one prominent league insider, which could have enormous consequences across the NFC if Mayfield ends up missing time this season.
“The #Bucs plan to release quarterback Kyle Trask, per source. He will revert to IR with a shoulder issue, then work out a settlement or release soon and look for a new team. Tampa’s long-time QB2 on the move,” reported ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler on Monday.
Fans reacted to the news on social media.
“Remember when Bucs fans thought that dude was going to be a star?” one fan wrote on Twitter.
“Remember when we wasted a 2nd round pick during a Super Bowl window on him?” another fan asked.
Fowler followed up with a report on who the Bucs’ new second-string quarterback would be.
“The #Bucs are making Teddy Bridgewater the primary backup to Baker Mayfield. Bridgewater came out of retirement to sign with Tampa on Aug. 5. Now, he’s QB2.”
It’ll be interesting to see how Bridgewater fares if he’s forced into game action this year.
