The Browns’ unfortunate situation is only getting worse. Top draft pick Myles Garrett, a defensive end, suffered a right ankle injury on Wednesday and was unable to finish practice. He’ll undergo an MRI to discover if there’s any significant damage, but the team fears it’s a serious injury that could keep him off the field for a while, according to Cleveland.com:
“He went as long as he could,” said [Coach Hue] Jackson, in a somber tone.
Jackson acknowledged that Garrett’s status for the opener Sunday against the Steelers is in doubt.
“We’ll see where we are as we move through the week,” he said.
The Browns won’t know the extent of the injury until the results of the exams are in, but one source said the club fears he could miss a period of weeks, possibly four or more.
If Garrett does miss the season opener, he’ll be unable to fulfill his promise to “chop down” Ben Roethlisberger.
Garrett was the No. 1 pick in May’s draft, and he’s already endured a pair of injuries in practice. In June, he suffered a lateral left foot sprain, keeping him off the foot for a few weeks. Last season at Texas A&M, he missed three games with a high left ankle sprain.
The Browns already opened as underdogs in every game this season. Playing without their promising, young defensive end won’t help their odds.
