The blockbuster Trey Lance trade shook the NFL world up on Friday night. After San Francisco dealt their former Top 5 pick to rival Dallas, plenty had things to say on the move. That included 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy.
In the aftermath of the trade, Purdy followed head Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch in commenting on his former teammate Lance. Given how close to the situation he was, it’s not surprising.
Purdy said of the trade, via NFL.com, “I love Trey, everything that he’s done for this organization and obviously for myself. I know I’ve told you guys a bunch of times before. But going in last year and then him just being by my side from the get-go sideline, meetings in the locker room, wherever we are at, man, he’s been a real one and helped me come into the league and welcome me with open arms and showed me the ropes to this whole thing.
Purdy continued on Lance. “So can’t tell you how grateful I am for him and to have him in my life and to be here with him,” he said. “So forever grateful for Trey. Obviously, in terms of the situation, like happy for him that he’s able to go into a good situation, and we all feel like it’s a good fit. But at the end of the day, I can’t say how thankful I am to have played and been a teammate with Trey.”
As you might remember, Purdy assumed the role of starting quarterback for the 49ers last season. He stepped in for Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo, who suffered serious injuries. Purdy, along with Christian McCaffrey, helped fuel the offense, and they went all the way to the NFC Championship Game.
The former Iowa State Cyclone is likely to be the starting quarterback this season, assuming he’s in good health. He sustained a torn UCL in the NFC Championship, an injury he’s working back from. The 49ers recently named Sam Darnold as their No. 2 quarterback, which gave way to the blockbuster Trey Lance trade.
