Darrynton Evans pulled off arguably the best play of the NFL preseason.
In the end, it wasn’t enough to help him make the Buffalo Bills roster.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported Tuesday the Bills have released the 25-year-old running back, who signed with the Bills in late July.
The move surprised some NFL observers, given Evans’ incredible 35-year touchdown run in Saturday’s preseason game against the Chicago Bears. The former Appalachian State star burst through a small hole, made a nice cut then broke four or five tackles on his way to the end zone.
But the Bills have a crowded running back room, with starter James Cook backed up by veterans Damien Harris and Latavium Murray.
Evans quickly thanked the Bills and their fans after his release.
“Grateful for the Opportunity! Thanks Buffalo,” he tweeted.
So Evans, a third-round pick by the Tennessee Titans in 2020, will look elsewhere to continue his NFL career. He has 30 carries for 125 yards and one touchdown in stints with the Titans and Chicago Bears.
Many NFL fans think that one preseason play alone will be enough to get him a shot somewhere else.
