Bill Belichick is currently still with the New England Patriots and the Dallas Cowboys are currently being led into the playoffs as the No. 2 seed by head coach Mike McCarthy. But one NFL insider seems to think there’s a chance that Belichick could be the coach of the Cowboys next season.
This week, prominent NFL insider Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk published an article suggesting that if Mike McCarthy is not able to lead the Dallas Cowboys to at least an NFC Championship game appearance this year, Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones might choose to bring in Bill Belichick to replace him.
“When Cowboys owner Jerry Jones assessed the future of coach Mike McCarthy by saying ‘we’ll see how each game goes’ in the playoffs, my own mind went back to the notion that, if McCarthy doesn’t deliver at least an NFC Championship, McCarthy could be out — and Bill Belichick could be in,” Florio wrote on Wednesday.
“It’s not as crazy as it sounds. Belichick, by saying he’d be willing to surrender some power to stay in New England, was also sending a message to potential future employers. And if Belichick is willing to defer to anyone when it comes to shopping for the groceries with which Belichick would cook the meal, it’s Jerry and Stephen Jones.”
To support his point, Florio shared a quote from Belichick about Jerry Jones and Stephen Jones from earlier this season in which he had high praise for them and the organization. He also shared an anecdote revealing that Belichick once asked Jerry Jones to consider him for future job openings after he was fired from the Browns.
All in all, it’s certainly interesting news to hear an NFL insider throwing out this suggestion, and the NFL world had a lot to say about it on social media.
We’ll certainly have to see what happens.
