The Cincinnati Bengals have been desperate to make sure this year doesn’t get off to the slow starts that have become typical for the franchise in recent seasons, as they attempt to bring their two-year hiatus from the playoffs to an end.

To achieve this, the Bengals played Joe Burrow and other high-profile staters in their first two preseason games, depsite the increased risk of injury in their first two preseason games.

Unfortunately, Cincinnati confirmed some brutal injury news on Thursday, per one prominent insider.

Bengals G Cordell Volson, who has started 48 games over the last three years, will likely miss the entire 2025 NFL season with a shoulder injury that requires surgery,” reported Ari Meirov on Wednesday.

It would seem the injury has helped the Bengals reevaluate things, as the franchise is walking back its original approach to the preseason.

“I haven’t talked in depth with the players about this third game,” head coach Zac Taylor said in his press conference. “I’ve talked to Joe, I haven’t specifically told these guys they’re not playing. But they’re not playing.”

“I feel good about where our team’s at right now,” Taylor said to reporters. “So, again, I’m excited to get through the preseason and go play games because I see what I see in practice. So, I’m just really excited — from top to bottom — about a lot of the players we have.”

It’ll be interesting to see how the start of the season goes for the Bengals this year.
