There’s been a Nathan Peterman sighting in Chicago.
The NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported Saturday that the Chicago Bears have elevated Peterman to their active roster.
That’s a good sign that starter Justin Fields, who has been battling a shoulder injury, will not play Sunday against the New York Jets. Trevor Siemian would then get the start for Chicago, with Peterman backing him up.
Peterman, of course, earned legendary status for his poor play while starting four games for the Buffalo Bills in 2017 and 2018. As a rookie in 2017, he threw five interceptions in one half against the Los Angeles Chargers. In another memorable start, coincidentally against the Bears, he somehow had only 189 yards on 49 attempts. With three career touchdown passes, 12 interceptions, and a QB Rating of 34.0, Peterman is a last-ditch resort. He saw action in one game apiece in 2020 and 2021 with the Las Vegas Raiders.
The NFL world reacted with surprise earlier this year when the Bears signed Peterman to a one-year contract. So news that he’s going to be on the active roster Sunday once again stunned fans, many of whom had forgotten he was still in the league.
“How is Peterman still in the league?” asked Danté Dio.
“Show some respect for the most consistent quarterback in NFL history,” tweeted another fan.
“He’s an unmatched GOAT,” tweeted another fan.
Didn’t let one of the worst games in history kill his dream. Inspirational.

Peterman may have a chance to shut up the naysayers if he’s pressed into action Sunday.
