With the NFL season officially ending with this past Sunday’s Super Bowl, teams around the league have begun to fill out the remainder of their coaching staff. That includes the Baltimore Ravens, who announced on Tuesday morning, that the team had hired former Georgia Bulldogs offensive coordinator Todd Monken to the same position.
After winning back-to-back national championships at the college ranks, Monken had been eyeing a potential return to the NFL.
“We conducted 21 interviews with 14 candidates throughout a thorough process that had wide-ranging organizational involvement,” Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said in a statement released via Twitter. “Todd’s leadership and coaching acumen were evident from the beginning. He has a proven track record for designing and teaching offensive systems that allow players to succeed at the highest level. We’re excited to get to work and begin building an offense that will help us compete for championships.”
The 57-year-old Monekn has wide-ranging experience in the NFL, coordinating offensive attacks for the better part of four seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2016-18) and Cleveland Browns (2019). Monken also coached the Jacksonville Jaguars’ wide receivers from 2007-10, and later became the head coach at Southern Mississippi from 2013-15.
Now, he’ll have a chance to potentially work with Lamar Jackson — a player which the organization has been pretty adamant that they want to keep for years to come.
The NFL world reacted to the big Ravens news.
Hopefully, Todd Monken actually lets Lamar Jackson throw the ball, instead of making him a babysitter for the ground game.
