When the Carolina Panthers traded for Baker Mayfield during the offseason, it was largely assumed the one-time Cleveland Browns starting quarterback would be the new starter in Carolina, and that was confirmed when the team named Mayfield the starter over Sam Darnold during the offseason. But after Mayfield’s struggles followed by an ankle injury, there’s a chance that he loses the job early in the season.
In a press conference on Monday, Panthers head coach Steve Wilks was asked if Mayfield would still be the team’s starting quarterback once he returns from injury, but Wilks would not commit to that.
“I can’t give you that answer,” Wilks said during his press conference, according to Fox News. “But I can tell you right now those guys [in the quarterback room] are going to compete at that position just as well as other positions to see who exactly goes out there on Sunday.”
Both Mayfield and Darnold are currently out with ankle sprains while rookie quarterback Matt Corral suffered a season-ending injury in the preseason. With all three sidelined, P.J. Walker led the team, but he was taken out of Sunday’s game with a head and neck injury. Behind walker, former Georgia Bulldogs quarterback Jacob Eason is the team’s only remaining quarterback.
When Mayfield and Darnold get healthy, it looks like we could have a quarterback controversy on our hands.
