The Atlanta Falcons did not have a lot of salary cap space left this season after making some key offseason additions, but the team just made a pretty important move that frees up quite a bit of salary cap space and could allow them to bring in some more talented players to help bolster the roster.
According to a report from league insider Field Yates of the NFL Network, the Falcons have restructured the contract of one of their players in a way that frees up quite a bit of cap space the team can use to pursue other players.
“The Falcons have restructured the contract of LT Jake Matthews, converting base salary into signing bonus and creating about $7.1M in 2023 salary cap space,” Yates said in a post on X, the social media website formerly known as Twitter.
It’s not clear whether or not the Falcons made this move with any specific free-agent player in mind, but either way, it allows the team much more flexibility to add players to its roster in the middle of the season.
It will certainly be interesting to see what the Falcons choose to do with this newfound roster flexibility and how they bolster their roster.
