A.J. Green was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft and he spent the vast majority of his career as the clear-cut top receiver on his team. But with Green now on the back end of his career and on an Arizona Cardinals team that features young stars like DeAndre Hopkins and Rondale Moore, he doesn’t get near the playing time or targets.
In an interview after Sunday afternoon’s win against the Los Angeles Rams, A.J. Green admitted that it’s “difficult” to not be the team’s primary option.
“It’s very difficult,” Green said, according to the team website. “I’ve been the guy for the last decade. It’s hard to come off the field. But I understand my role. I know what I can still do, I know I can still play at a high level. Sometimes you can’t control it. You just have to be ready.”
On Sunday, Green had just two catches for a total of two yards – but one gave the team a first-quarter first down and the other gave them a much-needed touchdown to effectively put the game out of reach and secure the victory. Meanwhile, Hopkins had 10 catches for 98 yards while Moore had nine catches for 94 yards.
