Aaron Rodgers was supposed to be the New York Jets’ savior this season, leading them to the playoffs and perhaps even the Super Bowl.
That dream ended Monday night when Rodgers tore his Achilles during the first drive of the Jets’ season-opening drive against the Buffalo Bills. He was replaced by Zach Wilson, who helped the Jets win the game. However, there are plenty of concerns about whether or not Wilson will be able to live up to the expectations, especially when he had such a rough 2022 NFL season.
For his part, Rodgers has a lot of faith and respect for Wilson and his ability to lead the Jets to the promised land.
Despite being out, Rodgers is fully behind Wilson for the next 16 games and potentially beyond if the Jets make the playoffs.
“I’m very confident in Zach and I think he’s confident in himself, which is the most important thing,” Rodgers said on The Pat McAfee Show on Friday. “It was an important offseason for him. It was important for him to get his confidence back and to work on some of those fundamental things.”
“I’m excited for him and I’m really looking forward to getting back into the building.”
Wilson completed 66.7% of his passes for 140 yards, one touchdown, and an interception on Monday. If he wants to live up to the hype the Jets took into the 2023 season, he’s going to have to keep improving for sure.
