We knew that Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers was playing with a broken thumb after the quarterback revealed the injury himself last week, but it appears the extent of the thumb injury is actually worse than most expected.

On Sunday afternoon, league insider Ian Rapoport reported that Aaron Rodgers suffered an avulsion fracture of the thumb during the team’s 27-22 loss to the New York Giants in London on Oct. 9. According to Rapoport, Rodgers’ injury is serious enough that “surgery is almost always the answer to fix this type of injury.”

It’s pretty big news for a former MVP who is still one of the top quarterbacks in the entire NFL, and the NFL world had plenty to say about it on Twitter on Sunday morning.

“An avulsion fracture can happen when extreme force — such as a hit from Giants linebacker Oshane Ximines — causes the ligament to rip away from the attachment, taking some bone with it,” Rapoport wrote. “Essentially, it is a fracture and a torn ligament, resulting in joint instability.”

It’s certainly not a pleasant or optimistic update for the Packers quarterback, but he downplayed the injury last week, saying “I think I’ve had worse injuries I’ve played with.”
