Aaron Rodgers is playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers this season as he gears up for his year-41 season in the NFL. However, Rodgers isn’t taking his foot off the gas any when it comes to holding his receivers accountable, something he has done throughout his career.
The Steelers drafted wide receiver Roman Wilson out of the University of Michigan last year, but injuries stopped him from contributing in any significant way in his rookie season. Wilson had some inconsistencies in training camp, and Rodgers spoke about needing to get the young wide receiver out of his head.
“I need to get Roman out of his own head a bit. He cares so much about whether it’s my approval or he’s doing it right. He’s just got to trust himself because he’s so damn talented,” Rodgers said.
Now, Rodges is discussing Wilson again.
“We’re going to coach him hard. He’s a great talent, but that can make the difference. We’re going to hold him to a standard of excellence. He has a chance to be a big-time talent in the league,” Rodgers said about Wilson, according to Nick Farabaugh.
This isn’t the only recent instance of Rodgers’ maturity, either. He addressed disparaging comments his new teammates may have made about him before he signed on with the Steelers.
“Well, I think there’s a great quote in a TV show that I enjoyed called Ted Lasso. Ted talks about one of his favorite quotes: be curious, not judgmental,” Rodgers said, according to Blitzburgh.
“And I think that’s kind of how I wanted to approach this season and anybody that said anything, I try and put myself in their shoes as much as possible. And I respect the hell outta you and what you’ve accomplished in the game and your leadership from afar, it seems like you’re the type of leader that I’d wanna play with. So when you said that I didn’t take offense to that at all.”
It’ll be interesting to see if Rodgers can bring out the best in Wilson when the regular season arrives.
